Bungendore Fine Art Gallery celebrating 20 years

“Glimpses of Land and Sea”…by Val Johnson F.R.A.S.

The paintings in this exhibition represent my travels with a sketchbook recently. I always take a sketchbook with me when travelling as one never knows when a moment will appear and stimulate your artistic senses. The exhibition looks at contrasts between sea and land.

About the artist

Val is a Fellow of the Royal Art Society of N.S.W, a member of Art in Miniature Canberra, Queanbeyan Art Society and Strathnairn Arts. Her career began in the sixties studying Commercial Art at East Sydney Technical College whilst employed as an artist at David Jones, Sydney, where she designed the animated Christmas animated window displays.

In the 80’s Val furthered her studies in life drawing, still life, portrait painting, printmaking and fine crafts at Bathurst NSW. She has  also attended workshops at The Julian Ashton Art School, the Royal Art Society of NSW , and Open Art Courses at the National Art School Canberra. Val has given a number of demonstrations and workshops in the ACT, NSW and QLD.

Val exhibits widely and has won numerous awards for her work. She has been hung three times in the Portia Geach Portrait Prize, twice in the Bega Regional Gallery Art Prize, and won the inaugural Allan Hansen Memorial award for Exhibiting artists at the Royal Art Society of NSW. She has been Reserve Grand Champion, and the Heritage Award twice at the National Capital Art Show Canberra. Val has been a finalist in the Bald Archy Award for Satirical Portraiture numerous times, and was also a finalist in the Caleen Award twice at the Cowra Regional Gallery. Recently Val has taken artists on painting journeys throughout Australia to paint.

Throughout her career Val has had a number of joint and solo exhibitions in Bathurst, Port Macquarie, Sydney and Canberra. In May 2008 Val held an exhibition on the Island of Leros in Greece. She is represented in the Bega Valley Gallery Art Collection, and exhibits in members exhibitions at the Royal Art Society of NSW Lavender Bay Gallery Sydney. Val has had numerous joint and Solo exhibitions throughout her career. She has exhibited Solo numerous times, at Sunset Gallery Port Macquarie, Yarralumla Gallery Canberra, RAS Lavender Bay Gallery and Breathing Colours Gallery in Sydney, and Strathnairn Gallery. This is her first solo as guest Artist at Bungendore Fine Art Gallery Bungendore.
